DAY 1: Highlights of Vientiane
On our first day in Laos, we enjoy a tour of Vientiane, the sleepy capital of Laos. We visit the most important temples of Wat That Luang, Wat Pha Kaew, Wat Si Muang and Wat Si Saket, as well as the Patuxai Monument. We end with a sunset across the Mekong. Dinner and overnight in Vientiane.
 
DAY 2 Vientiane to Vang Vieng
Today we drive north to scenic Nam Ngum Lake, where we enjoy a two-hour boat trip. After lunch we continue on to Vang Vieng, a chamring town set amid karst mountains.
 
DAY 3: Kayaking around Vang Vieng
We visit a popular cave to explore the limestone formations, before visiting an organic fruit farm where we can sample the local wines. After lunch we enjoy the beauty of the Song River by kayaking back to Vang Vieng.
 
DAY 4: Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang
We take a short trek in the surrounding countryside, visiting several important caves and taking in scenes of traditional Lao life. After lunch in a local village, we continue to Luang Prabang, our base for three nights.
 

DAY 5: The Pak Ou Caves
After a visit to the elegant temple of Wat Xieng Thon, we take a boat up the Mekong River to the holy caves of Pak Ou, overflowing with ancient Buddha images. We also visit a village where the local liquor Lao Lao is produced, a village of silk weavers and a Saa paper village.

DAY 6: Kuang Si Falls
Today, we make an excursion to the beautiful waterfall of Kuang Si. It is possible to take a dip here on a hot day. On the way back to town, we stop at the village of Khamu. Dinner and overnight in Luang Prabang.

 
DAY 7: Luang Prabang to Phonsavan
In the morning, we visit the royal palace museum before flying east to the city of Phonsavan. We explore town in the afternoon.
 
DAY 8: Plain of Jars and on to Vientiane
We make a trip to the puzzling Plain of Jars to view these curious jars. We then visit the former provincial capital of Muang Khun, with its historic temples in partial ruin. Later we fly south to Vientiane.
 
DAY 9 Pakse, Wat Phu and Mekong Islands
We transfer to the airport for a flight south to Pakse, gateway to the south. We take a boat cruise down the Mekong to the impressive Khmer temple of Wat Phu before continuing by road to Don Khong, a charming island in the Mekong. Dinner and overnight on Don Khong.
 
DAY 10: Boat Cruise Around the 4000 Islands
Today, we take a boat trip through Si Phan Don or 4000 Islands. We travel south to the islands of Don Det and Don Khon, taking a walk to the raging rapids called Li Phi Falls. We then head by road to the Phapeng Falls. Don Khong for dinner and overnight.
 
DAY 11: Bolaven Plateau and Taat Lo Waterfall
We travel north to the Bolaven Plateau, where we enjoy an elephant trek in beautiful natural surroundings. We spend the night at the Tadlo Resort, located next to the beautiful Taat Lo Waterfall.
 
Day 12: Through Coffee and Tea to Pakse
Today, we travel slowly towards Pakse, stopping to visit tea and coffee plantations and ethnic minority villages along the way. We spend the night in Pakse.
 
Day 13: Back to Vientiane for Sights and Sounds
We fly back to the petite capital of Vientiane for additional sightseeing and shopping.
 

Day 14: Transfer to Next Destination
After breakfast, we transfer to the airport for the onward flight.
